Book Club: A Dirty Job by: Christopher Moore

After about 14 hours in the car I finished A Dirty Job. The story revolves around Charlie Asher a new father, a resale store owner and most recently, a widower. It all starts in his wife's recovery room where he goes back to give her a CD only to find a large black man in a mint green suit standing over his wife and then suddenly, shes gone and Charlie is left with a new baby girl and a penchant for having people drop dead in front of him. He is given a new job, Death. There are many rules you must try not to break for if you do the underworld may come Above.

Moore is very crass and raunchy, if this was a movie it would be rated R, possibly PG-13 if they took a couple things out. He is funny and quirky, sometimes hard to follow, but this is coming from someone who read it on buses and cars filled with people and distractions. It's pretty twisted in a Tim Burton Edward Scissorhands kind of way. Dark humor at it's finest. I think the book takes a bit of a dive towards the end but it is still a good solid ending and worth a read.

I think I would be inclined to read more of Moore's books in the future. He has a funny take on dark matters and is dirty in a way that doesn't grate or take away from a book. There is a good sprinkling of real life needs and wants in there and characters that seem to act like a real person would. Be warned though, I had a version that glowed in the dark, not fun to wake up to in the middle of the night!

Please let me know if you have any recommendation for my next read! I have already started Dark Places and LOVE it!
