Yes! I'm so excited for Halloween!

1. I finished my ax last night!! It's looking pretty good, I wish I had a little more time to work on it since I could have made it more realistic but I had to take a couple short cuts to finish for today.

2. I got to ride the bus this morning with The Avengers! I helped Dr. Chris with his class costume, he is Nick Fury costume. We pulled it together from Goodwill and Craigslist and some DIY skills.

3. I am just flying through Dark Places and I'm a little sad for it to end!

4. We've been able to clean up our house super quick and grab some snacks since we are last minute hosting a pre-Franklin bash. Seriously keep it safe! FYI Your first Uber Ride is free within $30 when you sign up! Use the code: marisam42.

5. Seriously, it's Halloween and I actually get to hand out candy this year! Chris and I bought some backup candy and mini Playdoh in case we run out, or just want our own candy!

Have a great weekend everyone!

Dinner at Zinburger

Last night I had dinner at Zinburger with some fellow advisers so we could have a little chill time together and maybe indulge in some half price wine! Sometimes it's just really nice to hang out and maybe talk a little shop and also talk about our own experiences. We're a pretty young advisory board which makes it nice since we're all kind of in the same point in our lives where were just getting used to being 'adults'.

I had never been before, but I had heard good things. It was nice enough last night we could have sat outside but we stayed in since it had been raining earlier. We definitely went with some wine and I got a Breakfast burger and split some truffle fries. It was more than enough for me! The nice thing is since they ground their own beef you can choose how you want your burger done. Mine was so full of flavor I really had to resist eating all of it because I knew my stomach wouldn't be able to hold all that food! One of the girls got the Seared Ahi Salad and it was SO good! I definitely think I'll be back again!

I don't usually write about stuff like this but you know, I saw this owl this morning and it was like, you didn't take very good pics of your pumpkin seeds, you should probably write about the awesome time you had last night.

Can you see him? Man I wish iPhones had better cameras! He really wasn't that far away from me.

Woohoo it's almost Friday!!!

Pumpkin Carving!

Last night we carved pumpkins and we had so much fun! We went to a friends pavilion by their apartment and it was so nice and so gorgeous outside, I even wore shorts! We had a couple beers, some hot dogs and guac! It was so fun and we got some great pumpkins out of it!

Of course I couldn't resist putting Kon in his pumpkin costume!

I also saved my seeds to make later! I haven't carved a pumpkin or made seeds in YEARS! I'll be sharing my recipe tomorrow! Stay tuned!

Book Club: A Dirty Job by: Christopher Moore

After about 14 hours in the car I finished A Dirty Job. The story revolves around Charlie Asher a new father, a resale store owner and most recently, a widower. It all starts in his wife's recovery room where he goes back to give her a CD only to find a large black man in a mint green suit standing over his wife and then suddenly, shes gone and Charlie is left with a new baby girl and a penchant for having people drop dead in front of him. He is given a new job, Death. There are many rules you must try not to break for if you do the underworld may come Above.

Moore is very crass and raunchy, if this was a movie it would be rated R, possibly PG-13 if they took a couple things out. He is funny and quirky, sometimes hard to follow, but this is coming from someone who read it on buses and cars filled with people and distractions. It's pretty twisted in a Tim Burton Edward Scissorhands kind of way. Dark humor at it's finest. I think the book takes a bit of a dive towards the end but it is still a good solid ending and worth a read.

I think I would be inclined to read more of Moore's books in the future. He has a funny take on dark matters and is dirty in a way that doesn't grate or take away from a book. There is a good sprinkling of real life needs and wants in there and characters that seem to act like a real person would. Be warned though, I had a version that glowed in the dark, not fun to wake up to in the middle of the night!

Please let me know if you have any recommendation for my next read! I have already started Dark Places and LOVE it!

Weekend Update!

Woohoo! I loved our weekend! On Friday I took Kona to his uncles house and then we headed out! We got there just in time to grab a couple drinks out with our hosts and then headed to bed to prep for our big Saturday!

We had a little sleep in and then headed over to the stadium for a little tailgating. Jillian and James' friends had this all down to a science! They parked overnight and brought everything over to grill and drink and have fun before the game! We met so many sweet people and the weather really turned around for us.

Despite James' sad face in the background we had a lot of fun even though they lost. :( After the game we walked over to the downtown area and went to Tin Roof for some dinner. Where Chris thought it would be a good idea to do the Tin Roof Challenge. It is four chicken, peanut butter and honey sandwiches and 32 ounces of milk. Our waiter didn't have much confidence but he did it!
Afterwards Chris did a couple laps but somehow didn't throw up. I almost did and one of our friends did. It is just not appetizing to see someone eat that much. We then went to Bluegrass Tavern and had to throw our hands up, I was probably the most exhausted out of all of us. I headed straight to bed. T
he next day we said goodbye to our awesome hosts and the pups they were taking care of as well.
Saying goodbye to Dudley so I can go home to my Kon! The cherry on top of the weekend was seeing Hannah, my usual Lexington hostess and her mom! She asked me to be a bridesmaid in her wedding next year in Lexington! I am so excited for her and the next year she has in store!
Seriously a great weekend but I am insanely exhausted! I hope everyone else has a great one too!

It's Friday!!

I'm just thankful this week is over! It was a rough week for me trying to get stuff finished in general. Do you ever feel like you're just working and never actually finishing anything? That's how this week was and I'm glad it's over!

1. I'm so thankful I took today off! I've gotten to get extra snuggles with my Kon, take him on a long walk, and am currently enjoying my coffee and breakfast and having a quiet morning to myself.

2. We're going to Lexington today! I'm really excited for my first ever college football game, even though it probably won't have the results we are wanting for UK

3. Props! Chris and I have been working on our Halloween props and they are coming along nicely. I think I'll try to finish priming them before we leave today.

4. Sugar Papers calendars and notebooks are coming back to Target next week! I loved mine this year. I think I'm going to get a hanging calendar for our house too this year.

5. Halloween is next week! We'll be handing out candy at a friends house since we had zero, count 'em, ZERO kids last year! We have a couple pumpkin carving parties and possible Halloween parties to attend so I'm pretty pumped about that!

I hope everyone has a great weekend!!

Hibernation Season

What about the autumn makes you want to hibernate? I swear every morning this week I've been ready to continue snuggling with Mr. Chris and Kona. I love that we get all the seasons but this chill makes me want to stay under the covers as long as possible. I've whittled my routine down to about 15 minutes instead of 45 minutes to get in those extra snuggles!

I've been falling asleep sooner as well! I just love to snuggle on the sofa after dinner and then
I'll just fall asleep. I guess when you finally get a comfortable sofa that's what happens! When we lived in Baltimore Chris and I would stay up really late, even though I had to get up around 5am to get to DC. We didn't have a comfy couch to lull us to sleep! I just looked up our old IKEA sofa and it brings back so many memories! hahaha!

This was the sofa we had in our teeny tiny living room. Keep in mind our space was like 11x13 so we didn't have too many choices! Sometimes I really miss that little fun house we lived in!

I'm excited to hibernate a little tomorrow. We're going to be travelling to KY! We're loading up some movies and books to entertain us and I'm excited to experience my first ever college football game!
What movies should we bring? I'd love to get some suggestions!

Gone Girl

OMG I saw this movie last night and seriously, so good! I read the book almost right after it came out a couple years ago for a different book club in Baltimore. I heard of it through Pop Culture Happy Hour and I really loved it. The book is so twisted I think it is a must read and I insisted on pretty much my whole family reading it. The only bad part for me was it made me feel a little bad about marriage but if you don't get affect by books like that then it's a perfect thriller!

Seriously this movie is so well done. Maybe not everything I would have thought or cast but seriously good. I went with my book club here and about half of us had read it and the other half knew little snippets about it. But the twists were real to them. They were totally shocked and it was awesome. There were several things that I had forgotten but came up seamlessly throughout. Our book club had a little joke going about Ben Afflecks 'frontal' shot, calling it the apathetic peen shot. Which it kind of was, you get a little NPH if you dare to keep you eyes open during that part. There were a few tiny differences from the book but otherwise I thought it was pretty true to the book. But this is also coming from someone who read it two years ago so take that with a grain of salt.

I really want to see it again, I thought Rosamund Pike really showed off her chops in this. I mean Amy is probably one of the most unlikable characters you can find and she played her beautifully. The one thing I did miss and I think a lot of people missed was the 'cool girl' aspect. I didn't find Amy to be that cool girl Nick fell for. She wasn't as 'Amazing Amy' as I would have thought. Now I want to read to book again!

Please tell me! Have you recently read Gone Girl? Have you seen the movie? Tell me your thoughts!

Sample Saturday: Coming back around

With my birthday and the holidays coming up I have been looking at all the new holiday make up gift sets coming out! I really wanted the Sephora Superstars last year but didn't get it since it sold out! :( I was looking into getting the one this year and then got to thinking about my Summerstash to see if maybe I was too quick to judge it, since that guy is still on sale! I really liked 7 out of 10 items including the bag.

I wanted to give the Stila eye shadow  another shot and it disappointed me again, I definitely think you need to get the Stila primer the full sized ones come with the get the full affect of the product. I want to like it because it's so pretty but it stinks the set doesn't come with the primer since the regular ones do.

I finished the Marc Jacobs mascara and it worked well but it's far from my favorite. I liked that it coated my lashes but if you want full body lashes I would go for something else. Sometimes you don't know when to toss a mascara out because it still works nicely you just need to make more passes, this stuff however gets very clumpy and goopy once it gets too old. This did not convince me to buy the full size. It was nice to try but definitely not worth buying a full size.

Finally the bag, I really liked the bag and used it for several trips and as a purse makeup bag, until it got very frayed. Like, super frayed...

So sad.
I really like everything else in the stash, I'm still not sure if it is worth $45, I got it while it was on sale for $40, used a 10% off coupon and bought through ebates so it was pretty worth it for me.

But I think I might ask for the Superstars, there are a bunch of things I really want to try, like the Anastasia brow pencil, the Fresh Sugar Rose treatment, Stila eye pencil and the Nars Orgasm blush, along with some other really awesome products I already I like. The only thing that stinks is the Smashbox BB cream only comes in light. Light is my shade but people with darker skin than mine will have a useless product. But seriously, this is really worth it, almost all the products are full size so if you were disappointed with the small size from the Summerstash, this is chock full of full sized products. It pays for itself with three products, so if you were even thinking about trying a couple of them you might as well get the whole pack and get some free stuff to try!

I also used my Rainforest After Dark Palette to make this look. I still loved my palette and loved the look but the Stila shadow creased after a couple hours.
I really liked this look, pretty subtle, lady like but a little added fun with the sparkle.

Weekend Update

On Friday we met some serious traffic on our way to Sam's Bottle Shop, but we also got to meet some friends there. If you've never been, they have a Friday deal from 4-7 where there are free samples and you can buy some other on tap drinks. Afterward we couldn't decide where to go, we waited so long that we decided to grab some Five Guys and have some drinks at home. Where we then headed out to Pantana Bob's, of course we were swayed to go by some UNC Alums. We had a regular undergrad time. We had fun but our friends might have had more fun since we had to have a little sleepover at our place! Luckily we were prepped to host a couple people for the night.

On Saturday we took Kona to the dog park where he met a couple puppy friends.  We're trying to get him more socialized, it takes him so long to warm up to other dogs now that the dogs in our neighborhood have stopped coming to our park. Thankfully, he warmed up and somehow ended up looking like a character from a Dr. Seuss book.

Then we went to Home Depot and Goodwill to pick up some stuff for our costumes! On Sunday we went for a run and threw the disc around with little Kon. Then we went to work on our costumes.  I think they will come together really nicely, I'll keep you updated on the progress of our project. Finally we took the boards out and rode around before dinner.

Based on my weekend, I fear for our future children. Also, they will probably have the best costumes ever.

I hope you all had a great weekend!

Five on Friday!

1. I'm still out of my mid excited Heather is moving to Charlotte! Like way too much champagne on a weekday excited!

2. Chris and I were planning on going to the beach this weekend but we really just need some time to hang out together at home.

3. I think part of that time will be dedicated to making our costumes! I frikin' love making costumes for Halloween! Anyone have any creative ideas??

4. My birthday is coming up which means I've been looking for some birthday presents to add to the list. It's taking a lot of will power to not just go ahead and buy stuff!

5. Leftovers, I made Coq Au Vin and BBQ Shrimp this week, leftovers galore! So that means I don't have to cook even night! Woohoo! I like to cook but it is really nice to have a break every once in a while. I feel like the fall/winter time is an easier time to do that kind of thing since you want the warmth of everything and in the summer you usually want fresh and cool food.

Looking forward to a restful weekend with Mr. Chris! Hope you have a great one!

I can't bring myself to write a proper post because one of my best friends accepted a job in Charlotte! She'll start in a month! I am crazy excited and I don't think it is a coincidence that there is a Living Social for Cajun Queen today!

Book Club: Pizza Muffins

This month for book club our theme was pregnancy cravings! Our hostess noted that one of our members might be a 'Gone Girl' with her new baby so we should have cravings at the gathering, also a loosely veiled way of getting what she wants because she told us she was pregnant too!! Our other member had her baby on Saturday morning and he is seriously adorable. Back to the muffins!

These are based off the Rachel Ray Recipe and from this blog. I was in such a hurry to bake these and run out the door I don't have a picture of my own! I actually doubled this recipe for a regular 12 cup muffin pan and had maybe two muffins worth left.

Pizza Muffins

3/4 cup flour
3/4 teaspoon baking powder
1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
pinch of salt
1/2 tsp red pepper flakes
3/4 cup whole milk
1 egg, lightly beaten
1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1 cup cubed pepperoni
1/2 cup store-bought pizza sauce

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Grease a 12-cup muffin pan. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, Italian seasoning, salt and red pepper flakes (if using) ; whisk in the milk and egg. Stir in the mozzarella, Parmesan and pepperoni; let stand for 10 minutes.

Stir the batter and divide among the muffin cups. Bake until puffed and golden, 25-28 minutes.

Meanwhile, microwave the pizza sauce until warmed through. Serve the puffs with the pizza sauce for dipping.

These are so good and I really crave them every once in a while, I usually have all these ingredients but pepperoni and they are so good even without it!

Book Club: One Good Turn by: Kate Atkinson

One Good Turn is kind of like the movie Crash but set in the UK. It's like that in the fact that everyone is somehow connected to the story and you don't find out until the end how they are connected. Everything revolves around what looks like a case of road rage and escalates into murder, theft, extortion, divorce, money laundering and so much more.

The cast of characters take you all over the place in just three days, but also flashes you back to last year, and into the fantasy world of the same character. I found the story line a bit hard to follow. For me I have been reading so many books with multiple story lines that I just started to get lost. It reads like a screen play, I wish I had assigned actors I know to certain roles. I think I would have been able to remember who was who and who did what. I know there were some story lines that simply dropped off. I would not recommend any long pauses in between reading. Even with regular reading I found myself rereading parts to make sure I hadn't missed anything. I'm still trying to remember who did what and to whom! I also wish the ending had a bit more of a bang but with so much going on I expected a big ending.

Overall this was a good book but not a great one. It's a step above beach reading. It's not too heavy, at least in my opinion, and it's interesting enough that you can entertain yourself but not enough that you won't remember to reapply sunscreen. I might have had a stronger appreciation for this if I had read her first book. Jackson Brodie is a character in that one that flows into One Good Turn from her first novel. I have heard great things about her first novel, Case Histories.

So tell me, have you read One Good Turn? What did you think? Let me know in the comments!

Weekend Update

This weekend I didn't stop but for one moment. I went straight home, took Mr. Chris to the airport so he could enjoy himself in Nashville for a bachelor party and ran back home to finish packing. I then got Kona all ready to ride to Charlotte. We had a little longer trip than usual. It started raining really hard but we weren't really in a hurry. I got home and ate dinner with my parents while they packed to head out to Boston! I'm so jealous they get to go for about a week! I loved Boston when we went two years ago.

As much as I wished I could have slept in on Saturday I headed over to Noelle's house to help her out with her show. We packed everything in our cars and went out to set up for the Ballantyne Festival
It was very warm but under our tent it felt great! We talked to so many people and had a great time! Even when it started POURING down rain and we were trapped under the tent! We even shortened the legs as low as they could go so we could get as much shelter as possible. We got soaked either way and most of Noelle's paper products got ruined but they aren't anything that can't be replaced! We even saw a blow up play slide tumble over! Eventually the rain stopped but by that time many  vendors had already packed up. We ended up following suit and drying ourselves off in the process.

Afterward we headed over to Soul Gastrolounge for some delicious drinks and food and even more sistertime! We wanted to grab some sweets from Amelie's but the line ran all the way to the back! So we picked up a couple Cookout Milkshakes and headed home.

I had to get up pretty early so I could be back in Chapel Hill for a meeting. I made it just by the skin of my teeth! I finished up and picked up Kona so we could go to the Chi O Pumpkin Patch. We picked up a couple pumpkins and I went home for a nap! I was exhausted! Then it was just a waiting game for Mr. Chris' flight to get in after there was a medical emergency on his plane! It wasn't terribly late but boy am I tired today!
I hope you had a great weekend too!

Friday, October 10, 2014

I swear we're just go-go-go over here all the time! Chris is headed out to Nashville this weekend for a bachelor party which means I'm headed to Charlotte for some much needed sister time!

1. I will be helping Noelle out with the Ballantyne Festival! So if you're in Charlotte, stop by her booth and say hi!

2. I already loved this song but it was so cool to hear TSwifts version!

I seriously can't get the original out of my head!

3. I finally got my gym membership renewed! Now I need to find the perfect person to get me back into shape! I loved spinning so hopefully the classes won't be to packed for me to get in!

4. I've been strong, and haven't cracked yet on buying any make up and trying to use up what I have. whew. babysteps.

5. I've gotten a lot of stuff done a work this week. Sometimes those hurdles you have to get over are so worth it. Also finishing something is just awesome and knowing you did a good job is so satisfying.

So grateful for this week and the beautiful weather we've had! I'm still looking forward to a constant chill in the air and actually be able to wear jeans! I'm ready to put my shorts away. Although having the top down in the Jeep is awesome!

I hope you all have a great weekend!

Thursday, October 9, 2014

In a couple weeks we are going to Lexington with some friends! I am so excited I haven't been in a couple years and it feels like forever!! I don't think we will be going to a football game but instead we will either be going out to a nice dinner or doing a bourbon tour! Chris has never been so we will definitely be going to Keeneland and I'm going to do my best to get him to at least one brewery. We might need to take him to either Merrick Inn or maybe A La Lucie. I would LOVE to get some recommendations for our trip!
Was this seriously three years ago?! I can't believe it's been so long! This will be my first time not really being able to spend time with Hannah but with some new friends and some new experiences!
Have you ever been to Lexington? Please leave me some recommendations in the comments!

Wild World

So the other day I was walking the Kon dog and I saw what I thought was a bit of fuzz in the road. Well it wasn't...

Sorry I just had to share because it's all just so cute and I can't stand it.

Too Faced Everything Nice Palette Review

I recently got the Too Faced Everything Nice Palette and I finally got a chance to really use it on Friday evening. First of all, I had used the Better Than Sex mascara it comes with and really love it! Silly name, but it is really awesome mascara for me. It extends all the little eyelash hairs and really makes my lashes look fuller and longer. But back to the palette! I picked this up because I had a lot of drug store palettes that just weren't cutting it, and I wanted one with some colors but nothing too outrageous. I like to pop in a little blue or purple in every once in a while and this guy really has what I want!

The colors came out really lovely and they didn't fall and weren't chalky. I found that they applied easier and blended more seamlessly than my old drug store ones. I haven't been able to try them all but so far so soo so good! In this look I know I used: Chocolate Soleil, Papa Don't Peach, Inner Light, Mauvelous, Honey Pot, Live it Up, Shiny Happy and Knockout.
I had to keep a light hand for the blush, definitely not a bad thing but something to look out for first time users!
I haven't gotten an chance to use the brushes it come with but I will definitely give them a try soon! The only complaint I have so far is I can't fit the palette in the bag it comes with. I really expected to put it in the bag but it is just barely too big. On the other hand I really love that on the outside of the palette it says: Everything Nice, that's what pretty girls are made of. I just think that is a really sweet little touch and reinforcing that its not just what's on the outside that counts.

So tell me, have you picked up this palette? Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

Weekend Update

This weekend we remembered Chris' grandma. Chris' family came in from all over the east coast to say good bye. It was a very sweet service and of course it was good to see the family again. There were so many things I didn't know about her since I only knew her a short period of time and during that time she wasn't well. It was nice to hear all the things she did as a young woman. She was in Delta Delta Delta, I had already known that she had met her husband at Duke but I didn't know they were actually pretty close neighbors in New Jersey and their moms met, and knowing they both went to Duke, set them up! She was the president of her regions American Association of University Women, and was the mom to three boys. She lived to 98 and what a life she lead!

We had Chris' family over for dinner that night and had a really nice time just chatting and hanging out together.

We went over to a friends house to watch the tail end of the Kentucky game, I'm convinced that it was me putting on my UK Football shirt that turned it all around. I walked in, touchdown, turn around, what's that? one more touchdown. You're welcome UK fans.

On Sunday we stayed pretty low key, taking Kona to the dogpark and getting chores done around the house. We ended the day with some delicious Coq Au Reisling.

I hope everyone had a great weekend and has a wonderful week!

Friday, October 3, 2014

On Wednesday I thought it was Friday. It was pretty bad. It's been a long week.

1. Craving fall! I've been loving really thick knit beanies for many years. I have finally found an Etsy seller who has just what I want! Woohoo! I love this guy

2. I've gotten to drive our car a bit this week which is unusual but it's awesome and I love not having to worry about the car blowing up on the side of the road.

3. With the changing of the leaves it makes me want to change my hair too. I think this might be a common thing. I love Lily Aldriges hair here, a little bang a little ombre, it works.

4. Last year a ton of bloggers were pooping their pants over a Zara scarf, fortunately Target has one that looks JUST like it! I smell a Target run soon!

5. Since it's October it's go go go on getting the Halloween costume! I love Halloween and I LOVE to make costumes so let's hope I get it all together for the day! What are your plans for Halloween?

I hope you have a great weekend!!

I got that bootay bootay!

With fall comes some closed toed inspiration. Last year I wore a pair of booties almost everyday to work!  They are just the best! So I am looking out for a secondary pair for this year just in case I wear my old ones down. After all last year was the first time in my life that I ever actually wore a hole through a pair of shoes! I didn't even think that was a real thing! But it totally happens and when and if it does, I want to be prepared...
 {Row 1: 1, 2, 3, 4; Row 2: 1, 2, 3, 4; Row 3: 1, 2, 3, 4; Row 4: 1, 2, 3, 4}
There is a deal going on at DSW until October 9, 2014 where you can get $10 off $74; $25 off $149; and $50 off $249 if you sign in with your rewards member number AND free shipping!

And finally, this pair is from Target but they either don't sell them anymore or they aren't sold online! I've looked at my Target and can't find them! Are they still for sale? Anyone know!?

September Purchase History

Do I say every month that the year is flying? Because it really feels like it. Here is what I got in September, my next few months may not be as interesting since I'm going to try to curb the spending so we can get some savings back in while still paying for the car. I know, so uninteresting, but that just means I'll have to come up with something new every month!
I picked this guy up using some sweet coupons and discounts and got it for only $10!

I got the Dr. Brandt BB Cream as a free gift with purchase but I haven't tried it yet. I will report back once I do! I had to restock my Garnier BB Cream, it's still my favorite! After really liking the Maybelline Instant Age Rewind I thought I would give this a try but I really like the brightening aspect of the Maybelline concealer. The Garnier BB Eye Cream is nice for a more natural look and the metal ball is nice and cooling however I don't really like this kind of application.

I've tested the nail polishes and of course I really like them! I think Sally Hansen just makes really awesome opaque polishes that are also a freaking great deal! I'm excited to try to stylist, I really like polka dots on nails and I would like mine to be more even.
I was trying to make a cute look with some of my drugstore shadows and they were so chalky that I really wanted to get some higher quality shadows. I really love this set so far. I've used the mascara it comes with and I love it! The shadows are so great and I love the consistency. I also got this gift set for my skin. I had never tried the hydrating mask before and I really like it so far for an overnight treatment. Also these sets are awesome because they are usually $65 for just one, which sounds insane but these masks work WONDERS! Plus with this one you get 2 extras. You can't go wrong! The powder I tried while I was staying in my sorority house, one of the girls let me try it out and I really liked it for touch ups and had to get some for myself! Finally I said I got the stow in this post. We are really enjoying it and are thinking about getting a second!

Did you guys get anything great this month? Any good deals I missed out on?
