Book Club: Let's Explore Diabetes with Owls By: David Sedaris

I have always wanted to read a David Sedaris book. That sounds so weird but I have. I have heard so much about him and how funny his stories are but I just couldn't pluck myself up to give away my $27 hard earned dollars for a small book of stories. Luckily I didn't have to in this instance. Now I see what the fuss is about. This book read like he is your close acquaintance at a party with riveting and not so riveting tales to tell. They are interesting enough that you don't want to walk away, and smart enough you don't want to fall asleep. I have to say I did expect it to be a it funnier, however I did laugh out loud at several plot turns.

In the book he has several essays meant for high schoolers to deliver for competitions which I thoroughly enjoyed. I was a story teller in college and I could just imagine how I would go about telling these stories! I always wanted to go towards dark humor in my story telling which is why I told so many Tucker Max stories, also people loved hearing blatant and crass misogyny coming out of a petite woman's mouth. Maybe it was just my excellent performance maybe it was the words, we'll never know. Back to the Owls!

This book meanders through his life from his grown up life in France, to his childhood home in Raleigh, to his travels with books tours he takes us everywhere. It felt very fluid to me, but I can see how someone else might find it distracting. I loved the writing and the stories and hopefully one of my other book members did too and would be willing to share their other David Sedaris treasures!
