Six Year Old Feminest

I follow PostSecret on BlogLovin and I've followed it for a long time. I've never sent one in, I guess I don't think I'm extraordinarily interesting or creative enough to send one in. {Then why do you have a blog dummy?} Either way, I saw this one on Sunday and thought it was so interesting.
Why is this so interesting? Because when I was a kid I would always cut these off my undies. I flat out refused to wear anything with a frill, bow, pink, those little roses sometimes. Polka dots? Gag me. Florals? Sick. I would wear these things on occasion to appease the masses...
Look how happy I am!
Eventually I grew to love all things girly but I still have that want of masculinity, the power, the need to be taken seriously and not just thought of as a little girl. (I don't think that's what I was going for as a kid but you get it.)
I think and hope a lot of women now struggle with feminism and what that means. I certainly do. Why does a bow make you a small child? How is it taking away from your power? It doesn't make you any less smart and it doesn't make you any more or less of a woman. I think you can still be a strong, powerful woman and dress like one. Doesn't mean you have to.
Image is an interesting thing and it is something that, when it comes down to it, can mean a lot in the world.
There are a ton of conversations about what makes a feminist
This has taken a very interesting turn. I guess that's what happens when you just start writing. I actually wrote a whole lot more but no one really likes to read rambling. What are your thoughts on feminism? Were you a girly girl or a tom boy? If you're a man, I'd like to hear your thoughts as well!

Mother's Day Gift Guide: New Moms

My sister is a new mom, my nephew just turned one! I was a nanny in a past life and even though it's not even close to what being a mom is like, it's pretty similar. Here are a few things I think almost any new mom would like in her arsenal.
Okay I know you're probably thinking seriously more phone cases? But hear me out! Phones are some of the easiest ways to take pictures of your little one and what better way to get their attention than by a cute phone case? Taking all those pictures can really kill your battery so having a cute backup wouldn't hurt!
I know I know another scarf...but seriously these things are a life saver when you're out and about and you get spit up on, need to breast feed, change your baby, shield the light from your child, a light blanket, SO MANY USES!
I love the Bond No. 9 perfumes and I think their candles are gorgeous and smell just as good. They are a bit of a splurge but when you're a busy mom something that smells luxurious can make you feel more relaxed. (Nuits de NoHo has been one of my favorites for years! Have I ever owned it? Sadly, no)
I chose this solid perfume for its ease of use, you just dab a bit on your neck and wrists and you don't have to worry about it breaking in your purse. Speaking of purses I love this gym bag which can totally double as a diaper bag!
Seriously aren't all new moms constantly exhausted? When she does get a minute to herself let her pamper those tired eyes with some rejuvenation!
Okay, these are really just things I think my sister would like. Her and her husband recently got Stand Up Paddle boards (I'm totally jealous) and they are struggling to find ways to store them. (champagne problems right?)
If you have a mom that loves the beach or the water I think any of these items would be a perfect fit! Of course you could also give her some time to herself and watch her child(ren), or give her and her hubs a date night out.
New moms out there! What do you want?

Mother's Day Gift Guide: Mother-in-Laws

Of course you can get pretty much the same things for your mother-in-law as you do for your mother, however, I think there is a different relationship there. My mom and MIL are quite different and obviously I don't know my MIL as well as I know my own mom so here are a few things I think my MIL would personally like as well as (hopefully) any mom!
Again, giving her own spa is always appreciated. Would doesn't like to relax and enjoy a bubble bath? I'm not a regular bath taker but when I have things to make it more special I am ready to take the plunge!
 I think these little everyday things are really sweet and it will remind her everyday you care about her. If you include the atomizer with a scent you think she will like, all the better!
Again, at first I didn't think I would like slippers but now I don't know how I got along without them! I think anyone, mom or dad would really like these.
I think a lot of women like to carry a lot of small items in their purses so why not give her something cute to carry them all in?
This necklace is so sweet and not too big but if you personalized it with her child's initial on it will mean just that much more.
Finally, I got this set for my mom for her Easter basket and she really liked it! I think a lot of moms would like a little purse pampering!
What are you getting your significant other's mom for mothers day? Do you have any suggestions? Let me know in a comment!

Mother's Day Gift Guide

In an attempt to be more on top of things I'm creating a Mother's Day (Sunday, May 11, 2014) gift guide early enough so you can have time to order these things online with plenty of time to wrap and find a card for that special lady in your life! Or just go ahead and pick them up this weekend! I'll have 2 more follow up posts for new moms and Mother's-in-law. Of course all of these gifts can be for any lady in your life that is like a mom, whether they be related by blood, a friend that is a mom, or even a fur mom like me!
All moms need a little pampering right? I know my mom loves a good bath so why not treat her to a lovely bath bomb, mask, and candles to set the calming mood! When she gets out she can moisturize her lips with the most lovely lip balm.
I don't know about your moms but mine loves to travel, and when she does she travels in style. When you are travelling a good scarf can be so multi-functional! 1.) of course to keep you warm 2.) impromptu umbrella 3.) modesty, my parents are going to Italy soon and you aren't allowed in cathedrals with exposed shoulders or knees and a scarf can be a fast wrap or skirt! 4.) Covers a plethora of stains 5.) Scarves are always in style right?
I know I included this phone case in my Easter Basket roundup but my mom said she really liked this one. If you ever hear your mom say she likes something take a note! Even if it's a long time before you need a gift for her she will appreciate that you listened and remembered!
Like any good mom she is fully prepared for anything. My mom is kind of a tech junky so I know this Grid-It will come in handy to control all of her unruly cords on the go. For her purse I think she would enjoy popping her items in this cheeky bag of tricks!
Time to get personal! Does your mom like to garden? Check out Home Depot, Lowe's, Home Goods or even Target for all her gardening needs! Give her a personalized gift of jewelry, my grandma LOVED this necklace my sister made her. {Place your order here!} Is she a working mom that needs some cheeryness in her office? Give her cute functional gifts. Completely clueless? Give her your time! Whether that be doing something for her, or taking her out on a date and just chatting. I think parents always want more time with their children, after all the best things in life a free right?

Let me know what you're getting your mom for Mother's day!

Express Order

Express was having a 40% off sale and I decided to jump on it. A lot of their items are online only or aren't very available in stores so I bought more than I planned on keeping.
Shockingly, everything I got ran a little big. Both sets of leggings (Size S) were about 4 inches too long! Otherwise they fit quite nicely! It will be a little heartbreaking to send them back. I wasn't a huge fan of the side panel ones, they didn't do much to flatter and the material didn't seem very durable.  The other pair was so comfy but I would have liked to try on the XS but I think the waist might be too small. I plan on returning them in-store and seeing if they have XS to try.
The Cotton Anorak ran really big! I got and XS and it kind of looks like I'm wearing Chris' jacket even with the waist cinched as tightly as I could.
The Parka I really liked. I know it's called a parka so I should have expected it to be heavy but it just looked so light online that I thought it would be a lighter jacket. I decided to return this one as well, not because I don't like it but because it's starting to get warm and I would rather use my paycheck towards something I can wear now or at least soon. I really liked how it converts to three different items. But I know I won't be able to wear it for many months so everything goes back! :( Otherwise I thought the XS fit nicely and will keep that in mind if they keep this around until the fall!
I decided to post this now rather than at the end of the month since I won't be keeping any of my items and so you'll see what they look like on a petite lady!
FYI my measurements are: 32/25/36 my inseam is ~26" and I'm 5'2".
Have you had any good finds lately? Where do you buy leggings? I have been on the hunt for what feels like forever!

Weekend Update

As you may have surmised from yesterday Dr. Chris and I went home to Charlotte for the weekend. We had our fair share of margaritas and food. So much so when we got back we were half expecting dinner to be made for us! What the life that would be! My sister and I took advantage of the rainy day and spent the day indoors shopping. I picked up a couple things for everyone's Easter baskets and a couple things for myself I'm not completely sure I'm going to keep. You'll have to stay tuned for my April Purchase History to find out! I did look at a shirt I have been eyeing for a while but is still to much for me to justify buying...
I love the plain front and the open twist back. It's sexy without being over-the-top.
On Sunday we went to church and it was a miracle we got seats! We were third in line at our door to get in and we barely got seats for me, my dad, and Chris! My sister came later and there wasn't a seat to be found! As usual it was a beautiful service. If you are ever in Charlotte and are looking for a church I would highly recommend Myers Park United Methodist Church. I go every time I go to Charlotte and no matter who is preaching I enjoy it but Dr. James Howell is just a phenomenal speaker. He is quite dry, extremely smart and I think he really just gets it. I won't go on but I could, and if you ever have questions feel free to leave them in the comments!
We spent the rest of the Sunday with our family and had Jackson pick up his Easter eggs. He is still too young to understand exactly what we are doing but I think he really enjoyed opening his eggs! What did you do this weekend? Do you have any Easter Traditions? How do pass the time when it's raining?

Weekend Roadtrip

I hope everyone had a lovely Easter weekend, and that you got to enjoy the little bit of sunshine we got on Sunday! Chris and I went back home to see our family's for Easter. I don't know about you, but I think riding in the car is one of the best ways to connect with people. After all, you are pretty much trapped with that person until you reach your destination. I know I have previously written about how to distract yourself or keep yourself awake during those long hours, but just having the opportunity to talk to someone without any real distractions is such a blessing. I love still getting to know my husband and learning about that weird things you think of during those long hours on the road. I used to drive to work with my dad and even though our drives were pretty short it was always a nice opportunity to catch up with him in a way I wouldn't have been able to at home or really anywhere else.
{Me in college, don't worry, I'm not actually driving}
One of the sad things about getting a car in college is that I missed out on driving with someone else and getting to know them, their car quirks, what music they like, what their families are like, what stories they have to tell. I remember a few four hour drives to and from Wilmington that I really got to know my friends, and friends of friends and just the relationships between them.
{He bought it for $600!}
Cars are interesting things, they have so much value, they give you so much freedom, so many memories. My brother-in-law asked me to ask my dad about his first Mustang and that started off so many conversations about cars that weekend. How we felt in certain cars, how they smelled! When I brought up my dad's 280Z to my sister we BOTH talked about how we remembered how it smelled! How many memories we had with different cars, the one we got rear-ended in, the really old one, the inherited one, our first cars, the standard no one besides me could drive.
{It looked just like this!}
I have to admit this was not originally how this post we going to go but who doesn't like a drive down memory lane?
What was your first car? What are your car memories? What do you talk about in the car? What is your dream car?

Friday Finds

If this is the only blog you read then THANK YOU! If not, I'm sure you saw everyone's suggestions for items to buy in the Shopbop's friends and family sale. I like Shopbop, but even with 25% off which, in my opinion, is barely a sale, almost everything is still out of my price range. Anyone with me!? With Easter coming up and Wedding Season I figured I would show you what I would be looking at if I were to buy a new spring outfit, from stores I actually shop in.
{1, 2, 3, 4, 5}
1.) At $86 from $248 you can't really beat that! I love the seaming and the ladylike flow.
2.) $41 from $119! Again, I love the seaming and eyelets just scream spring to me!
3.) I love the racer front and back of this dress, the print is fun and I feel like this dress could easily be dressed up or down. ($88)
4.) Man, do I love white for spring, plus the sheer back on this dress is suck a nice surprise. ($88)
5.) This guy is a little out of my comfort zone but again I love the racer front and back are so cool and I would really like to try to mix patterns. Plus if you wanted to take this guy into fall you could wear a button up underneath. ($76)

For His Easter Basket

I figured it would only be fair to show what I might put in Dr. Chris' Easter basket too!
 {1, 2, 3, 4}
1.) Today would be the third time Chris has forgotten his keys, maybe a catch all will help with that!
2.) Chris is such a boy scout, he uses super glue and duct tape to fix up his wounds, I think this antimicrobial gel will be a bit better!
3.) The man loves his bow ties!
4.) I really like this more 'outdoorsy' looking watch
{5, 6, 7, 8}
5.) We don't really have any precious wood in our house but I think he would like these custom coasters
6.) To maybe help him remember his keys!
7.) What man is complete without a sleek flask?
8.) Again, how manly, I think he already has plans to make himself one out of wood!
What would you put in a manly Easter basket?

For your Easter Basket

I think it is still fun to do Easter Baskets as an adult. They are kind of like the Christmas Stocking of Spring! Here are a few things I'm sure a young lady wouldn't mind finding in her Easter Basket:

{1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9}
Who doesn't love mini eggs? In my opinion Easter has the best candy of all the holidays! What would you want to find in your Easter Basket?

The Perfect Summer Shoe

As I said on Friday I was going to post on shoes. It's been a while since I splurged on shoes for myself and since I literally wore holes in 2 pairs this winter I think it's about time I got some new favorites! I've come to allow myself to spend a bit more on shoes since I've had such a problem with them in the past. Right now I'm looking for a gold/tan/nude summer heel, a wedge would be preferred, with straps, but none that come up too high on the ankle, elasticated if possible (for maximum comfort and style) oh yes and CUTE! These shoes would be a match for both work and play. Here are my current musings:
{1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9}
The second pair I'm in search of is a pair of summer flats, these are more of a mixed bag, I would really like some I can wear to work but also some cute ones I can walk around in. Here is what I've been looking at:
{1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6}
I mean, those watermelon shoes! Come on!
And while I was looking I can across some flat sandals that just looked so cute I would HAVE to try them all on!
{1, 2, 3, 4}
So tell me, is there anything on your summer shoe wishlist?

Sample Saturday: Benefit the POREfessional; Benefit Stay Don't Stray; Clinique All About Shadow Quad

We had quite a busy weekend! The weather was just so beautiful we took full advantage of if by eating outside and doing as many things outside as possible. Even outside chores are more fun when it's nice out!
On Saturday I decided to try out the POREfessional Primer and Stay Don't Stray eye shadow primer. Can you tell I took these AFTER volleyball?? Well you can tell my makeup didn't really budge even with the shiny-ness!
I used a lighter coverage BB Cream since I was expecting to be a sweaty mess at the end anyway. But I actually liked both products a lot, the POREfessional was light and didn't mess with the lines of my makeup, an issue I've experienced with other primers. I have actually tried this one before and didn't like it, but figured I would give it another shot. I might purchase it in the future now that I know it's staying power!
I haven't had issues with eye shadow creasing in the past so I don't know if the eye shadow primer made a big difference. I will say I tried it under my eyes on Sunday and it creased more than ever. Has anyone else had this issue?
On Sunday I tried the eye shadow primer, the POREfessional and a Clinique quad my mom got in a gift with purchase.
I probably wouldn't choose these colors but I figured I would try them out! I liked how it turned out but I think I might still used them separately. I did like that the peach pop wasn't nearly as pink on the skin as it looks in the pan.
This is my Sunday brunch look:
I think this looks much more pore less no? How was your weekend? Did you enjoy the wonderful weather? What should I try next!?

A little Inspiration for your Friday

I was going to post about shoes I've been trying to find for the summer but I came across this video and I love it! Buzzfeed is the best waste-your-time website ever! I'm sure you've seen it all over facebook, twitter, I think I've even seen it in the sidebar of news websites. It's hilarious and I love it. I know these videos are cheesy but I think they really say a lot. I love the saying 'be your own best friend'. I think a lot of times we think bad thoughts about ourselves, we can be skinnier, my skin could be clearer, etc, etc. But you would, I hope, NEVER be friends with someone who said those things to you. So be kind to yourself. And have a great weekend!

Greek Orzo Salad

So you know how I love my book club? I also love it because we eat and drink there as well! Usually the hostess makes a main dish and everyone else brings a side. This time our hostess decided on a Greek theme. I though this would be a great opportunity to try my hand at an Orzo Salad. This was so good! Everyone loved it. It's very light, but filling at the same time, easy to make plus it makes a TON! I'm still eating it 2 days later!
Originally I found the recipe through Pinterest but the blog I pulled it from is really good too! The blog is Cooking in Red Socks, which at first sounded like a weird name, but who am I to judge on weird names, then I read that her husband plays for the Red Sox! Pretty cool right? Jamie's blog has a ton of healthy recipes that I look forward to trying out! Her blog is extremely organized and I love how she had notes on almost every city she has visited with her ever-traveling husband. How can I not love her review on Camden Yards! Made me a little home(?) sick! Do you follow any good food blogs? Let me know in the comments!

Book Club: Tell the Wolves I'm Home

I recently joined a book club and it is so awesome! I really like to read but I'm not always motivated or I can't find a good book OR I don't want to pay for books. I know, I know, I could go to the library. I used to be an AVID library goer in Charlotte. I read so many books when I lived there, I had my library card number memorized! But this book club is different from any other book club I've been a part of. It's different in that we don't all read the same book and I LOVE that. We all bring a book or more to dinner and we discuss what is is about, if we liked it, etc. We then throw them all in a pile and choose new books! It's basically a book exchange, and I LOVE it!
There is always a lot of pressure in normal book clubs to choose a good book or if people don't like your book you feel bad or you just don't finish it! So many issues! This way I feel like the pressure is off, if I don't like a book I just pick up another one of my choices. This time I chose the second in the Divergent series (Insurgent) which, I liked the first one, but the second, I'm starting to get annoyed with the writing style. The main character is starting to get on my nerves but I still want to finish the series! I also picked up Tell the Wolves I'm Home by Carol Rifka Brunt. I am really enjoying it! It's about a young girl in the 1980's who's uncle just passed away from the AIDS virus. Through the book she starts to learn more and more about her uncle and his past. It's so sweet and sad, for some reason I really like kind of sad stories. I'm not completely finished with it yet but so far I'm really liking it and can't put it down! It might be because the main character is kind of weird and that's totally how I was as a kid...and maybe now as well! I feel like the relationship between the main character, June and her sister Greta, is so authentic, it really took me back to that time with my sister. (just the relationship not the actions) I've read several reviews and I agree this book could do well to be categorized in YA. It isn't too terribly heavy and it is, in my opinion, very easy to read. Have you read Tell the Wolves I'm Home? What did you think? Are you in a book club? Do you have any good recommendations?

Weekend Update

I had a pretty busy and productive weekend! We had friends over on Friday night as a thank you for watching our little Kon-dog. I made guacamole, fish tacos, grilled corn, fruit salad and Margaritas! Everything was a huge hit! Well, we didn't get to the fruit salad because we were all too stuffed and our plates were too full!! We stayed up far too late, played our music WAY too loud, and were quite ridiculous with Cards Against Humanity.
The next day I went on a shopping adventure...
Top Row: Dress; Skirt; Top; Dress
Bottom Row: Peplum top; Polka Dot top; Heart Top no longer available; Sheer back top
Can you guess what I actually bought?
We then watched the UK Game with a couple alums and had a blast! :) We brought over the rest of the fish tacos since none of us planned ahead, thankfully, Chris and I would have eaten tacos for days! (Not that I would complain!) Unfortunately we didn't have the same results last night! :(
Sunday I wasn't feeling very productive and I kept thinking of the candles I didn't get to buy. Then Chris said we were out of soap and I jumped at the chance to go back and get some candles and soap and I was extremely productive for the rest of the day. House cleaned, laundry done, meals prepped. Ah, it feels so good to have things done for you!

Sample Saturday: Smashbox BB Cream Review

I finally did it! I finally had the time and energy and mindset (aka remembering) to use one of my many samples! I decided to try my Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream in Light. Now, I don't really care for Smashbox foundation, I had tried the HD Foundation in light with a Try It Kit and it was too dark and quite orange for my skin tone. But this was a while ago, they have definitely repackaged and may have reformulated since then. It felt very heavy and streaky, even when applied with a beauty blender. I thought the BB Cream would be a bit lighter on the skin, as most BB creams are, so I decided to give it a try.
I wasn't very pleased with the application. I like to use my clean fingers to apply liquid or cream makeup and this felt greasy and heavy. I did like how the end results were. I definitely had to set it with powder as it had a sheen after I applied it. These pictures were taken after a long day of shopping and lots of trying things on! You can see I could use a touch up to clean up some of the shiny-ness but other than that it held up very nicely.
Bottom Line: I would give this a 3 out of 5 stars. Good coverage, but heavy application.

Hope you enjoyed! What should I try next!?

March Purchase History

I tried to keep it pretty light this month since I was going on vacation. But, since I was going on vacation, I of course needed some new items for my trip! ;)

Top Row: 1: too small, 2: unflattering, too small, 3: unflattering cap sleeve, no longer available; Bottom Row: 1: Love the details, 2: so bright and fun! No longer available! :(, 3: Just right! Want more!!
Can you tell I was on the hunt for a maxi dress? I only kept the bottom row. :)
I went home to Charlotte and had to stop by Marshall's because the one in Durham is so depressing. Of course I only picked up stuff for Mr. Chris instead of myself. I got him this awesome Kenneth Cole messenger since his Ben Sherman was starting to fall apart! And what guy doesn't need more khakis?
There is a Bath & Body Works right next door so how can you resist? I really try to run through my candles before buying more, so far I am really enjoying all of these! I might have to break that rule since I saw Paris Amour is back!
While we were in California we stopped by The Grove and picked up this shirt for Chris, which is much more vibrant in person, and these shorts for myself.
I almost forgot I bought some things this weekend as well! From my favorite, Marshall's! One of my favorite, overly expensive at $66, bras was only $10! Not too bad, not too bad for March! Did anyone else have some awesome shopping extravaganzas in March? Let me know!
